It is crucial to highlight that India rested players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rishabh Pant in the first T20I match against England to control their workload before getting them back for the following two games, which raised eyebrows over the BCCI’s selection process. Some notable cricketers, including Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Rishabh Pant, have been granted a break ahead of India’s ODI series against the West Indies, which commences later this month.

Since Kohli and Rohit are experiencing difficulties with their batting, the selectors tried to lighten their stress by allowing them to rest during several series. Virat Kohli, who is currently out of rhythm, has been asked to be sidelined for the whole of the West Indies tour, which also included five Twenty20 internationals. Gavaskar emphasized that players shouldn’t stop playing limited-overs cricket, specifically the T20Is, even though Test matches are taxing on a player’s mind and body.

“See I do not agree with players resting (during India matches). Not at all. You are playing for India. You don’t take a rest during IPL but rest while playing for India. I don’t agree with it. You will have to play for India. Don’t talk about rest. There are only 20 overs in an innings in T20. That does not take any toll on your body. In Test matches, the mind and the body take a toll, but in T20 cricket, there is not much of a problem (in playing),” Gavaskar shared the same on National TV.

The Legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, who is renowned for scoring 10000 runs in Test Cricket, suggested that the BCCI should implement a “Rest Policy” for the players included in the Grade A Category who earn a handsome amount of money and further emphasized giving the freedom to the top players to choose the series or tournaments as per their availability, or rather get their contracts modified.

“I honestly feel that the BCCI needs to look into this concept of rest. All the Grade A cricketers have received very good contracts. They receive payment for every match. Tell me if there is any company whose CEO, or MDs get so much time off? I feel that if Indian cricket is to become more professional, a line needs to be drawn. If you want to be rested, you need to reduce your guarantees. Then you take a rest because you don’t want to play. But how can anyone say that I don’t want to play for the Indian team? Which is why I do not agree with the concept,” Gavaskar further added.

The three-game T20I series, which got wrapped up on Sunday, witnessed India overcome England 2-1. Commencing on July 12, the teams will now battle in an ODI series of six games. India will tour the Caribbean for three ODIs and a five-match T20I series scheduled on July 22 at Trinidad’s Port of Spain for three ODIs and a five-match T20I series.
